Extra random matches
When the free matches on your account are used up and the next reward is still counting down, coins let you keep matching straight away. Same strangers, same next button, no waiting.
Private one-to-one video calls
From the online list you can call one particular person directly instead of leaving it to chance. Each of those calls costs coins on its own, and none of them eat into your free matches.
Gifts
During a video call or inside a live room you can send someone a gift. Rooms sometimes hand you a free gift to send; the rest of the gift list is paid in coins.
Paid live rooms
A handful of live rooms ask for an entry gift, or only open to people who have topped up. Rooms like that tell you what they need before you are let in.

What happens when your balance is low
The rule we care about most: a paid call never begins quietly. Try to call someone when your balance cannot cover it and a top-up screen appears first. Nothing is charged until you have bought coins and chosen to go ahead with the call.
Gifts carry a small safeguard as well. The first time you send a coin gift from the quick-send bar, a confirmation appears before it goes out, so a clumsy thumb on a phone screen does not quietly turn into spent coins. You can tell it to stop asking once you are comfortable with how it works.
Coin packs and their prices are listed in your account. Members of VIP see member pricing on those same packs, but the membership is optional and nobody needs it to top up. Its own page explains when it is worth considering and, more often, when it is not.

For most people the answer is live rooms, and nearly always through gifts. Wandering into an open room, reading the chat and saying hello costs nothing, so dropping in on people who are live is fine to do on the free side. It is the extras — paid gifts, ticketed rooms, the wheel — that draw on a balance.
Private calls are the other big one, simply because each call is charged separately. If you find yourself calling the same person again and again, that is a sign you have found someone worth talking to, and also a good moment to check how many coins that habit is using.
