Camera black? Mic silent?
Fix it in order.
When video chat will not show your face, the cause is nearly always a permission, another app, or the browser the link opened in. Work down this page from the top and most people are sorted by the third step.
The short answer

- Pick the right deviceLaptops with an external webcam or a headset plugged in may default to the wrong one. The camera icon in the address bar usually lets you switch.
- Restart the whole browserNot just the tab. On a phone, swipe the browser away in the app switcher and open it again.
Still dark? Then it is almost certainly a permission, and permissions live in two places: the browser and the operating system underneath it.

Where camera access gets switched on and off
A site needs a yes from the browser and a yes from the system. If either one says no, the camera stays black.
iPhone and iPad with Safari
Open Settings, scroll to Safari, then set Camera and Microphone to Ask or Allow. For a single site, tap aA beside the address, pick Website Settings, and allow the camera from there. If Screen Time is switched on, look under Content & Privacy Restrictions too, since it can block the camera for Safari.
iPhone with Chrome or another browser
Each browser has its own entry in the Settings app. Scroll down to it by name and turn on Camera and Microphone.
Android with Chrome
Tap the small icon to the left of the web address, go into Permissions and allow Camera and Microphone. For every site at once, go to Chrome's menu, Settings, Site settings, Camera. Then open the phone's own Settings, Apps, Chrome, Permissions, and confirm the camera is allowed there as well.
Android privacy tiles
Recent Android versions put Camera access and Microphone access switches in the quick settings panel you pull down from the top. If those are off, no app gets the camera, whatever the browser says.
Mac
System Settings, Privacy & Security, Camera: switch your browser on. Do the same under Microphone, then quit and reopen the browser, because the change does not apply to a window that is already open.
Windows
Settings, Privacy & security, Camera: make sure camera access is on and that desktop apps may use it. Repeat under Microphone. Some laptops also have a sliding shutter or a function key that cuts the camera in hardware.
The less obvious causes
When every permission says yes and nothing happens
Browser extensions are the usual culprit. Privacy blockers, script blockers and some VPN add-ons stop the pieces a live call depends on. Open a private window, where most extensions stay off, and try again. If the camera works there, turn extensions back on one at a time until it breaks, and you have found the one to pause.
A poor connection looks different from a permission problem. You do get a picture, but it freezes, goes blocky, or the other person hears you in bursts. Move closer to the router, try swapping Wi-Fi for mobile data or the other way round, and stop anything downloading in the background.
Office and school networks sometimes block the type of traffic real-time video uses. If calls fail on one network and work fine on another, that is very likely why, and no site can fix it from its side.
An outdated browser is the last thing to rule out, so update Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox to the current version.

Open the matching screen and choose video, voice or text. The first stranger loads with a nickname, age, country, level and language on show, so you get a rough sense of the person before either of you speaks.
